The central axis of this research area is represented by the establishment of the contemporary Caribbean. It includes the formation of the new nations in the English-speaking and French-speaking Caribbean after decolonization and departmentalization as it marked a transformation of the geo-political and cultural relations in the region; as well as those issues associated to the Hispanic Antilles, especially in aspects related to modern States, democratization, and development models that mark the fundamental points for their definition. Obviously, the Caribbean vocation of Venezuela, the exchange fluids (migration, cultural, commercial and political) among our nations and their neighbor islands are aspects constantly analyzed as a way to contribute to understanding our neighbor countries and the interest of the nation whose sovereignty over a wide haul of the Caribbean Sea constitutes one of its most promising potentialities.
